AFRICA SHOE PROJECT
We are so excited to be participating in the Africa Shoe Service Project for Youth Conference this summer! We will be collecting used, wearable shoes for the Power2Become organization, a non-profit group based out of Rexburg, Idaho.
The Power2Become organization helps to support basic welfare needs in Burkina Faso with the goal of helping the people there sustain, improve and become better through Jesus Christ. Burkina Faso is the third poorest country in the world. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is not yet established in their country. The Power2Become organization hopes that through their organization, they can unite the work of the Latter-Day Saints in the United States with those of Christian pastors in Burkina Faso and be able to open doors that might bring the gospel of Jesus Christ to the people of Burkina Faso. What an amazing opportunity for our leaders & youth to #Embark in Service!
** Start saving your shoes! The Power2Become organization accepts all WEARABLE shoes as long as they are in pairs. They cannot use shoes that are broken or unwearable. Children’s and adult TENNIS SHOES are the top priority.
After Power2Become receives the number of youth in each unit in our Stakes (your Stake YW Presidents are working on this), they will organize the service project and send instructions and garbage bags for shoe collection out to each Stake YW President who will assist in facilitating the project. Power2Become will set goals for each unit based on the number of youth. These goals will be reasonable & attainable with a little work. We want our youth to be successful and feel like they've accomplished something great!
The shoes that are collected in each unit in our Stakes will need to be transported to Great Falls for Youth Conference on June 25th, 2015. This transportation of shoes will be the responsibility of each individual Stake and/or Unit. When the shoes arrive, we will store them overnight until the loading of the shipping container the next day. It is vital that these shoes arrive on time as the semi-truck will only be here for 2 hours to load. If shoes are late, they’ll miss the boat! J
These shoes are then sold to a group in Tanzania, providing jobs to many who clean, refurbish the shoes and get them ready for resale. American shoes (even used ones) are highly sought after in Africa because of their superior quality. The funds that are earned from the used shoes will be used to support the building of a well for a community in Burkina Faso.
Please be sure to include all 12 and 13 yr olds. Even though these youth won't be coming to Youth Conference, we would love to include them in this service project. When all is said and done, the Power2Become group will make a video of the exact project that our shoes have supported. They'll send this video out to us after their trip to Burkina Faso at the end of the year. We'd like all youth in your Stake to feel like they've had a part in this great work.
The Great Falls Stake will use our Stake Public Relations Specialist and youth to help to get the word out in our community. We anticipate contacting the newspaper and TV and radio stations to help advertise the service project. We encourage you to do the same with your stake PR Specialist if possible as well.
In the October 2014 General Conference, Jeffrey R. Holland gave a talk entitled Are We All Not Beggars. In that talk he said: “In an 1831 revelation to the Prophet Joseph Smith, the Lord said the poor would one day see the kingdom of God coming to deliver them ‘in power and great glory.’ May we help fulfill that prophecy by coming in the power and glory of our membership
in the true Church of Jesus Christ to do what we can to deliver any we can from the poverty that holds them captive and destroys so many of their dreams…”
